I want build a Zip wire run for my children, which one do you advise to use?
This is a difficult one to answer.

Basically there is a choice of two types of Zip wire that can be used by children depending on the age and size of the children. The Junior Zip wire has been specifically designed for light to medium use by younger children between the ages of 5-10 years old and with a max weight of 63 kgs (10 stone). Then there is the Adult Zip wire which is a better built and quality Zip wire which is ideal for both Domestic or Commercial use and can be used by all members of the family.

Whichever Zip wire you decided to go with, you can be assured that the equipment supplied has been tested for and exceeds strict European Safety Standards.
Go back to the top of page

The Junior Zip wire is much cheaper than the Adult Zip wire - why?
Yes the Junior Zip wire is much cheaper and this is reflected in the materials used to make it. It has to be appreciated that Adult Zip wires are more expensive because of the higher standard and better quality of the product supplied, and that you can also look forward to a much longer life span of the equipment. Either way you will not be disappointed in your purchase.
Go back to the top of page

I have two trees which I am thinking of using, can these be used to support the Zip wire?
You will need to take into account the type, age and thickness of the tree to be used. A thinner tree will bend with the weight of the cable and through usage, so please be very selective. While it is not always possible to use two trees, it is possible to use one tree and then to build a support frame and platform at the other end.
Go back to the top of page

Can you suggest where I can buy any supports from?
You will not be able to buy readymade supports but you will be able to buy the wood needed to make them. We suggest that you look for a good Wood / Timber merchant or Fencing Specialist. Here is a very good company that do Machined roundwood timber in 150mm or 160mm Dia in lengths of 7.2m.

Can I install a Zip wire myself?
The simple answer to this is most definitely yes.

The Junior Zip wire can be installed very quickly by 2 Adults following the supplied fitting instructions between 2 trees or supports.

The Adult Zip wire will take 2 Adults a bit longer depending on how it is to be installed. If running the Zip wire from tree to tree, this can be as little as 1.25 hours. If running from Support to Support, this can take longer due to constructing the supports unless done in advance. If the supports are already built in advance then the fitting of the Adult Zip wire between Support and Support can take about 1 hour or less.
Go back to the top of page

Do you supply fitting instructions with your Zip wires?
Full fitting instructions are included with the Junior Zip wire which you will find very simple to follow. With the Adult Zip wire it is impossible to supply specific detailed fitting instructions because everyone's installation is unique and therefore no 2x installations are the same. However, we do supply in the box a generic set of fitting instructions which will give you a good overview as to how to install your Zip wire.

You can also download these fitting instructions from the relevant page depending on which type of kit you purchase.
Go back to the top of page

How can we protect the tree from the cable?
It is a good idea when you lasso the tree with the cable at the receiving end, to use part of an old tyre or some old thick rubber hose (double if possible) to protect the tree from the cable cutting in.
Go back to the top of page

What if I don't feel up to installing the Zip wire myself. Can you suggest any installers for me?
There are a number of companies available on the internet that will offer you a complete design, supply and install job but you will find that these can be very expensive - starting from about £5,500 +.

Unfortunately it is not really possible for someone to make a living purely from installing Zip wires, but if you live in the South or South East of England we do know of someone that will install (and if needed build your Supports) a Zip Wire for you.

Please contact him directly and mention that you found them through For Outdoors.

Alternatively, in the past our customers have made use of the services of a good friend who is capable of DIY, Landscape gardeners that specialise in hard landscaping or a Good builder. The same applies if you are looking for someone to build end supports.

Go back to the top of page

What are the weight limits for your Zip Wires?
The weight limit for the Junior Zip wire is a maximum of 70 kgs (11 stone) while the Adult Zip wire will take a maximum weight limit of 133 kgs (21 stone)
Go back to the top of page

Do you sell any Safety harnesses? If you don't can you suggest where to get them from?
we currently do not sell any safety harnesses but hope to do so in the near future. Safety harnesses need only to be use if you are running your Zip wire from a great height like a Tree house eg: 6 m or so. What we suggest is the you have a Safety harness with a rear 'D' connector that is connected by a Lanyard and a karabiner on the wire behind the Trolley so that it runs free (See link).

Teak Furniture

This Teak Furniture FAQ has been put together from some of the more popular questions that we have been asked. Please either click on the Question or scroll down the page for the answers.

What is Teak?
Where does Teak come from?
Is all Teak furniture the same?
Wood and Moisture?
Why is Teak the best wood to use for Garden Furniture ?
Furniture Joints?
Does your furniture require assembly?
What to expect with my Teak Furniture?
Does Teak require a lot of caring and maintenance?
Do I need to store my furniture away during the winter?

What is Teak?
Teak (Tectona Grandis) is genus of tropical hardwood native to South & Southeast Asia. The trees can grow up to 40 meters in height and are deciduous. As one of this world's finest woods, Teak has been used for centuries to build Ships, Outdoor structures and Garden Furniture.
Go back to the top of page

Where does Your Teak come from?
This is a very good and important question and something you need to be aware in making your choice.

Most of the world's Teak is sourced from renewable plantations in Indonesia. These Teak Plantations were first planted by the Dutch in the 1600's who held the colonial power at the time. In recent times these plantations have since been taken over and tightly owned and managed by the Indonesian Government, who are responsible for managing a strict policy regarding the size and quantity of trees felled each year together with annual replanting.

So hopefully you can see that the source of Teak is very important in our world today, as there are people, companies and countries that are exploiting non renewable forests. So please choose carefully.
Go back to the top of page

Is all Teak furniture the same?
The simple answer is No, not all Teak wood is the same. The outer (white) Teak is softer and should not be used. The inner mature Teak is what the best furniture is made from. Teak should be kiln dried which dries the wood to the core and therefore is less likely to crack - unlike air dried Teak which will retain up to 25% moisture.

The highest quality of Teak Garden furniture is machined made and machined finished. Machine made and finished furniture is more uniform in finish and therefore because of the extra finishing is more expensive. Normally this highest quality Teak (otherwise known as 'A' Grade) would as a guide cost 3 or 4 times the price of good quality teak furniture that most people sell.
Go back to the top of page

Wood and Moisture?
All wood in growing trees contains considerable quantities of water, commonly called sap. Most of this water should be removed in order to obtain satisfactory service from the wood in use. All wood gains loose moisture in an attempt to reach a state of balance with the condition under which it is stored or used.

To this end all the Teak timber used in our furniture is kiln dried before construction so as to minimise the swelling and contracting of the furniture.
Go back to the top of page

Why is Teak the best wood to use for Garden Furniture?
Our Teak Furniture is made from Teak which is one of the world's most valuable timbers providing durability and stability under extreme climatic conditions. Teak is a dense grained wood which makes it exceptionally strong, durable and resistant to rotting and warping with or without treatment.

Teak is also packed with its own natural oils which produce a smooth weather resistant wood perfect for quality garden furniture, which when combined with good workmanship, has a life expectancy of up to75 years - even when left untreated.
Go back to the top of page

Furniture Joints?
Some of our furniture does come with bolts like our extension tables, but these go through Tendon and mortise joints which are stronger than just dowelled joints.

The thickness of the teak is generally much greater than other hardwoods making our products even more robust. Our Teak furniture is built for endurance, made out of the most durable timber.
Go back to the top of page

Does your furniture require assembling?
Some pieces like coffee tables, folding tables and folding chairs, some benches, steamer chairs are supplied fully assembled whilst the rest of our range of teak furniture will need minor assembling of products, in which case instructions are supplied either inside or outside of each carton.
Go back to the top of page

What to expect with my Teak Furniture?
Natural teak if left outdoors will gradually weather to a lovely silver grey colour. This typically can take between 6 to 9 months depending on the amount of sun and rain it has been subjected to.

During the normal weathering process small cracks (known as checking) or splits may appear, this is a characteristic of all hardwood timbers and is perfectly normal and will not affect the strength or durability of the furniture. Checking is due to changes in the seasons and the wood releasing or drawing moisture from the atmosphere and is not to be considered as a defect.

Teak is an investment and if looked after it should provide you with many years of use.
Go back to the top of page

Does Teak require a lot of caring and maintenance?
The simple answer is No - your teak does not really need much caring or maintenance for you to enjoy it. Teak by its nature is meant to be left outdoors all year round. If you decide to leave out all year round then the teak itself will weather over time to a nice lovely Silver Grey colour.

If you prefer your furniture to keep its original colour then you need to oil or preserve your furniture before putting furniture outdoors. This is very much a personal choice but treating your Teak furniture with teak oil or other preservatives is not necessary and will not extend the life of your furniture - it is purely cosmetic. If you would like to treat you teak furniture - you must do this BEFORE putting furniture outdoors, so therefore make sure that you completely oil your furniture indoors (or somewhere no outside air can get to it) and allow to dry for a couple of days before placing outside.

Once weathering has started and your furniture has started to change colour, the longer you leave it to weather, the harder it is to return to its original colour. Should you prefer to return its original colour, remove previous oil or dirt by vigorous scrubbing or using a pressure hose. The pressure hose should be held at a distance of 6 to 8 feet away, set at about 1000psi (approximately 70 bar) and then rubbing with fine sandpaper in the direction of the grain.

Once you have completed the above process make sure that the furniture is then returned to indoors (away from outside air) and allow the furniture to completely dry out before applying any Teak oil or preserve. Teak oil should not be applied over accumulated dirt as this will result in darkening of your Teak furniture.
Go back to the top of page

Do I need to store my furniture away during the winter?
This depends on whether you have oiled or preserved your teak before putting outdoors.

Yes - if you have treated your furniture. At the end of the summer you should bring indoors and follow or guidance under care and maintenance - Question 9.

No - if you have decided to let your teak furniture to weather. Teak furniture can be left outdoors all year round. If you choose to cover your furniture outdoors during the winter then you should use a material that allows the wood to breathe. We recommend you don't use plastic.

Trampolines

This Trampoline FAQ has been put together from some of the more popular questions that we get asked. Please either click on the Question or scroll down the page for the answers.

Which shape Trampoline should I buy - Octagonal, Circular or Rectangular?
What age should my children be before getting them a trampoline?
Does the protective weather cover fit on the trampoline with a safety enclosure?
Will my trampoline need a cover?
What else might I need for my new trampoline?
Will my grass still grow under my new trampoline?
Can we use our trampoline when it is wet?
Can we sink our trampoline into the ground?
Can we use our trampoline in low temperatures?
Are trampolines waterproof?
Do we need any special tools or equipment to set up the trampolines
Some people think that trampolining is dangerous, is it?
Will I be able to get replacement parts for my trampoline?
What can I do with the trampoline in high winds?

Which shape Trampoline should I buy - Octagonal, Circular or Rectangular?
The choice of which trampoline to buy is really going to be determined by the size and shape of your garden in which you are looking to put the trampoline.

Octagonal trampolines are a combination of a circular and rectangular trampoline and have been designed with safety foremost. Apart from the safety aspect, they also combine the joy of a circular one with the power of a better bounce from a rectangular one.

Round trampolines were designed for all the family to have fun on. This was the original design of trampoline and still remains to be one of the most popular shape of trampoline to be brought. Beacuse of the round shape and the configuration of springs on a round trampoline it means that all the springs work together in unison which makes for a slower and more controlled bounce, it also works that the user of the trampoline will bounce back into the middle of the trampoline.

Rectangular trampolines are built to provide a better bounce - A Rectangular trampoline because of the shape and spring configuration causes the springs to work at a different rate, this allows for a more powerful bounce, these trampolines are better for experienced children who are members of a trampoline club, these clubs are where you will find rectangular trampolines.

All trampolines have their benefits and downsides, but generally a trampoline is brought for the amount of available space there is in the garden.

Remember you can always sink your trampoline down to ground level, which will increase the safety. If your children are thinking of becoming gymnasts, then a rectangular trampoline is better suited to gaining more height in order to do a summersault etc.
Go back to the top of page

What age should my children be before getting them a trampoline?
Safety guidelines recommend that no children under 6 years should use a full size trampoline. One thing that cannot be stressed enough is that adult supervision is essential when children are using trampolines.
Go back to the top of page

Does the protective weather cover fit on the trampoline with a safety enclosure? The protective weather cover is not designed to be used with a safety enclosure. Trampolines are designed to be left outdoors all year round and by using a weather cover, will not add to the life of a trampoline.

Weather covers are designed to keep off leaves, twigs and other foreign objects off the jump bed and must not be treated as anything else.
Go back to the top of page

Will my trampoline need a cover?
Although we supply a cover with some of our trampolines, they are not really needed. However, you may consider a cover for one or more of the following reasons:

* To keep the bed and pads clear and free from bird droppings, tree sap, creepy crawlies and industrial fall out.
* To keep the bed dry and ready for immediate use even on a damp day or immediately after rainfall
* To give a clear message when necessary to family, friends and others that the trampoline has been 'put away' and is 'not in use'.
* To prolong the life of the bed and pads by protecting them from the ongoing effects of UV radiation.

Go back to the top of page

What else might I need for my new trampoline?
If you have not already brought one with your trampoline, a safety enclosure should be considered a must, unless you are planning on sinking your trampoline into the ground. It is very unusual to put a safety enclosure on to a trampoline if you do sink in the ground.

Another essential buy that you should strongly consider is a Tie down Kit. These are a small invest which could help prevent an expensive outlay further down the road. If a gust of wind where to get under your trampoline, it could buckle the top rail which will then have to be replaced at an additional expensive cost.
Go back to the top of page

Will my grass still grow under my new trampoline?
Yes- in fact grass tends to grow greener and faster under the trampoline as the jump mat still allows some sunlight through. When mowing your lawn, simple carefully move your trampoline out of the way.
Go back to the top of page

Can we use our trampoline when it is wet?
Avoid using your trampoline when it is wet as it will be slippery. To speed the drying time you can use an old towel mop up excess water.
Go back to the top of page

Can we sink our trampoline into the ground?
Yes, this is an excellent option, as it will increase the safety and make your trampoline less visible. The distance between the mat and the bottom of the hole needs to be at least 3 feet. If your water table is high you will need to provide drainage. Also be sure to use the legs as they provide necessary support to the circular frame. For more information please contact us.
Go back to the top of page

Can we use our trampoline in low temperatures?
Our trampolines have been designed to be used all year round, however avoid using if covered in snow or ice.
Go back to the top of page

Are trampolines waterproof?
Yes - all trampolines are waterproof and have been designed to be left outdoors all year round.
Go back to the top of page

Do we need any special tools or equipment to set up the trampolines?
No - none of our trampolines need any special tools other that what is supplied, they can be "up and bouncing" in a matter of minutes.
Go back to the top of page

Some people think that trampolining is dangerous, is it?
No more than any other activity involving unrestrained movement. It is important to differentiate between the sport of trampolining where individuals are pushed to the limit of their skills and recreational trampolining where such pressures do not generally exist. Trampolining is certainly much safer than many 'accepted' activities such as horse riding.
Go back to the top of page

Will I be able to get replacement parts for my trampoline?
Yes. For Outdoors will help you by supplying spares where possible. We know that your trampoline is going to be very popular and will get an enormous amount of use. Over a period of time springs will stretch or break, the jump mat might need to be re stitched or replaced (watch out for bonfire spark damage). We carry and have access to lots of springs, beds and pads of all shapes and sizes and sometimes can have odd shapes and sizes made to measure.
Go back to the top of page

What can I do with the trampoline in high winds?
It is recommended that you purchase with your new trampoline a Tie down Kit. This simple and inexpensive piece of kit will help to keep your trampoline in good shape, but in the event of high winds or gale force warnings it is recommended that you either turn you trampoline upside down or remove the jumping mat.

What is a Tandoori Oven?
Some people think that tandoori is a recipe when in fact it is a method of cooking. Marinated food is cooked in an Indian hot clay pot, normally concealed in a casing which helps to insulate the oven.
Go back to the top of page

Is cooking in a tandoori oven safe and healthy?
Yes it is. Most food cooked in a tandoori oven is cooked using the two heat sources. The outside of the food is cooked by the heat generated in the oven and it's then cooked from the inside out due to the radiant heat from the skewers. Because your food is sealed and cooked at an extreme heat (in excess of 400°c), then your food is cooked virtually oil free and also to a temperature far higher than needed for food to be safe to eat. Cooking at this heat also helps to keep all of the foods good nutrients.
Go back to the top of page

What temperature does the oven reach?
When the tandoori oven has reached its optimum operating temperature, once the charcoal has burnt through and normally after about 60 mins, your oven will be in excess of 400°c (nearer 500°c).
Go back to the top of page

Is a tandoori oven easy to light?
Yes they are really easy to light. Just like a BBQ, to help your fire get started then we suggest you use good fire-lighters with good quality charcoal.

How much Charcoal does a tandoori oven use?
Your tandoori will use anything between 4kgs to 5kgs. Any less than this and your oven will not be hot enough.
Go back to the top of page

How long can I cook in the tandoori oven for?
Once your tandoori oven is up to temperature, then you should be able to cook in it for at least 2 hours if not more with one lot of charcoal.
Go back to the top of page

Does the outside of the tandoori oven get hot?
Yes. The outside casing of the tandoori will get very hot and must therefore young children and animals must be kept well away from the oven. Extreme care must be taken when using a tandoori oven.
Go back to the top of page

What sort of food can you cook in a tandoori oven?
There really is not a lot of food that cannot be cooked in a tandoori oven. You can cook many meats including chicken, lamb and beef, kebabs, fish and vegetables. The other favourite thing to cook in the oven is naan bread. Food cooked in a tandoori oven is not just beautiful and healthy, but is really tasty.
Go back to the top of page

Do you have any recipes we could use?
If you look under the "Recommended marinades and Recipes" section you will find some useful bits and pieces that we hope will be of use.
Go back to the top of page

Can your tandoori ovens be use in the house?
Sorry but no. All our tandoori ovens have been designed and built to be used outdoors only, by burning charcoal. There are indoor models available but not on our website. Sorry.
Go back to the top of page

How many people can you cook for out of a tandoori oven strong>>!!
Depending on which model you choose, but you should be able to cook for anything between 8 and 12 people.
Go back to the top of page

Can a tandoori oven be left outdoors?
Yes. During the good weather months it may be left outside (ideally it should be covered if possible). In the winter months you must not leave outdoors and must be put away in a draught proof place.
Go back to the top of page

After cooking, can the pot been cleaned out with soapy water?
No - because liquids may damage the clay pot. The inside of the pot can be cleaned by carefully using one of the scrapers or hooks to remove any dried bread but this must be done when the oven is luke warm on the way down to going cold.

Yes. All the tables we sell go beyond the requirements of the EN 14468-1 European Safety Standard. This Standard is made up of 4 categories for different levels of play and each Table level is clearly shown at the top of each of our product pages. This is also a good way of comparing other tables from different manufactures.
Go back to the top of page

How do I decide if I need an Indoor or Outdoor Table?
Indoor tables are not weather resistant but they provide an excellent bounce and are good value for money. However they must not be stored in damp conditions (such as a barn or garage) as exposure to moisture will cause the playing surface to crack. They will also warp if left outside in the sun for only a short period of time.

Outdoor tables are more shock resistant and can be safely stored outside all year making them more long lasting.
Go back to the top of page

What are the main differences between the Cheaper and more Expensive tables?
In the range of Table Tennis Tables that we sell, as the tables get more expensive, the playing surface gets thicker (therefore giving a better bounce), the legs of the table get sturdier, the frames get heavier, the wheels get larger, the net and post sets have more adjustments and you have the choice of playing surface finishes with MAT Top on Outdoor tables and SKIL Top on Indoor Tables.
Go back to the top of page

Can I compare your Tables against each other?
Yes you certainly can by looking at our comparison tables:

Go back to the top of page

Can I leave my Table outside all year round?
If you have one of the Outdoor tables from our range then the answer is yes. All outdoor tables are resistant to sun, rain, snow and frost and can be left safely outside without any risk of deterioration.

We do however recommend the use of a cover. The purpose of the cover is not to keep the table dry but to keep it clean so that it is always ready to play and for additional child safety. It will also extend the life of the table.
Go back to the top of page

Can Disabled players use your Tables?
Any of the tables in our range that have the Compact Technology folding System are suitable for use by disabled players in wheelchairs as the leg assemblies in these tables have been designed to allow a wheelchair to get under the table.

Motion detectors first started to arrive on the market in the early 1980's. Before this, all metal detectors were 'non-motion'. If you think of tuning a radio to your favourite radio station, you may occasionally have to re-tune it because it may have drifted off the station. This applies to non-motion detectors. As you scan the ground, the tuning may slightly drift from where originally set, but very easily brought back to the correct level. Motion metal detectors are self-tuning; once switched ON, they are continuously re-adjusting themselves for optimum operation. The metal detector search head has to be kept moving or scanning the ground in order to detect metal, the moment movement is stopped, metal detection stops, hence the word MOTION. The big advantage with this principle is that they are extremely simple to use and operate. Secondly, because of their sophisticated electronics, they are not affected as greatly by mineralised ground as non-motion metal detectors and therefore the penetration is greater. Also better discrimination is achieved without significant loss of depth.

What does the Discrimination Control do?
The Discrimination control allows iron, silver paper and other rubbish items to be ignored by the metal detector, while still detecting gold, silver, copper and other non-ferrous metals. The higher the control is set, the more objects will be ignored. Be careful not to set it too high though, as you may find yourself rejecting good targets. For example when the control is set at maximum only the most conductive targets, copper and silver, will be detected. As gold jewellery is usually alloyed with a lower quality metal it would be rejected in this case. With experience you will learn the best place to set your discrimination control. When starting out we recommend you set it reasonably low, as it is better to dig a few trash items than to risk ignoring potentially valuable targets.

Why is it not possible to only find good items?
Unfortunately a metal detector is not able to distinguish items as being 'worthless' or 'valuable'. It can however determine the conductivity of an object. Objects of low conductivity, such as iron, can easily be distinguished from a silver or copper object, which has high conductivity. The problem occurs in the so-called 'grey' area in-between. For example a 9-carat gold ring and a ring pull can appear very similar to a metal detector as they have a very similar conductivity.

What is Target ID?
Target ID is the metal detectors way of displaying the identity of a target in the form of a number. This complements the discrimination control by giving you the information the metal detector uses when it makes the decision whether or not an object should be detected. This allows you to determine accurately an objects conductivity, giving a strong clue as to its identity. On metal detectors with a discrimination control it was only possible to determine whether an object was more or less conductive than a chosen value. For example, if the discrimination control was set half way and an object was found, it would not be possible to tell whether it were a pound coin or a silver shilling. Target ID will give you this information as the shilling would be more conductive so a higher number would be displayed. This information is presented in two ways. Firstly a bar is shown when an object is detected. If the object is of low quality, iron or steel, only one or two segments will be shown. For a very good object, for example a silver shilling, the bar will fill up completely. This provides a very quick way of identifying the object. For more accurate identification, the Target ID number shows the point on the discrimination control at which each target would be rejected. As an example, a modern 5 pence piece would only just be rejected when the discrimination control is set somewhere between 50 and 60. When detected, the bar will fill up half way and the number '55' is shown.

How deep will a Viking Metal Detector detect?
This is an obvious question, but one that can be difficult to answer. Firstly the larger the metal object is, then the deeper it will be detected, e.g. an old pre-decimal penny will be detected deeper than a new decimal penny, simply because it is a larger metal object. Secondly, the length of time the object has been in the ground the shape of the item and how it lies in the ground can have an effect. Rings or loop shaped objects lying parallel to the search head produce excellent results for detection. Thirdly, heavy mineralised ground can reduce the penetration of your detector. Taking all this into account and dependent on which VIKING model is used, single coins will be found anywhere between 10cm (4 inch) to 22.5cm (9 inch) with larger objects up to 1 metre (39 inch).

What is the purpose of the Sensitivity Control?
The sensitivity control increases or decreases the metal detectors depth penetration in the Motion mode. Obviously, one wants to detect as deep as possible, but there may be times when the metal detector gives false signals or behaves in an erratic manner. This could be due to bad ground or some electrical interference from power lines or transmitters etc. In these circumstances, backing off the sensitivity level should help to achieve reliable operation.

Are Viking Metal Detectors difficult to operate?
Simple answer, NO. Our lower priced Non-Motion Metal Detectors are easily set or tuned to the correct level for correct operation. Our top of the range motion detectors are even easier, because of the more sophisticated electronics, automatically tunes the detector for you. Obviously all our metal detectors come with full operating instructions and remember our customer services are only a phone call away or email.

What is meant by Mineralisation or Ground Effect?
The ground contains quantities of iron oxides of which some soils are more prolific than others. These oxides have built up over many centuries on land mainly worked and farmed by humans. Other land can contain magnetic iron oxides, which are naturally present in the ground. Metal detectors are affected by this ground mineralisation which is referred to as ground effect. Beaches also have an effect on the detector caused by the electrical conductivity of salt water.

Can I use a Viking Metal detector on the beach as well as inland?
Using your metal detector on dry sand is exactly the same as using it on an inland site. However, wet sand is different, being known as conductive. Many thousands of non-motion metal detectors, like our Viking 1, 5 or 6, have been used continuously on beaches with fantastic success. Some makes of powerful motion metal detectors are rendered useless on wet sand, because they give false signals or indications of metal, when there is nothing there. Our VK20 & 30 both feature a beach mode providing reliable performance on the beach.

What does the Membrane Keypad operate?
Featured on the VK40 the membrane keypad provides an alternative method of setting up the detector to the traditional rotary controls and switches. All the functions are controlled from the 5 keys provided. A single key press allows the detection mode to be selected, and the Discrimination, Sensitivity and Ground settings can be adjusted using a simple menu system.

What does the Detector Display show?
The Liquid Crystal Display provides a wealth of useful features. Target ID provides a visual indication of the target identity, and the display also shows at a glance which mode the detector is operating in. On the VK20 and VK30 the display shows the control setting as they are adjusted, and the VK40 features a larger display allowing the detector set-up menu to be used. The display also provides a continuous battery check.
